Over the past couple of years membership of the Surrey Area Group has grown to the extent that now only a few members have the space at their homes to accommodate our monthly meetings. As a result, we decided to hold a couple of meetings a year at the Merstham Village Hall, one as a modelling day and one as an operating day. Following the success of first operating day in 2013, we decided that the 2014 event would be run as a public exhibition becoming Narr-O 2014. It is likely that we will hold a public exhibition every two or three years.
The Operating Day in 2013 included half a dozen members’ layouts plus demonstrations by Group members on buildings, DCC, soldering and etched brass chassis building. Narr-O 2014 had ten layouts from Surrey and South Downs Group members plus a couple of invited layouts, together with a good mix of traders including our own Modelling Sales and Publications (unfortunately Second Hand Sales managed to get double booked!). Publicity for the event was not quite as good as we intended and coupled with a gloriously sunny day meant that visitor numbers did not quite meet expectations, but we still managed to break even.
The 2014 Modelling Day was attended by many Group members with the day’s modelling covering stock and chassis building, scenery, wiring, DCC and much more. It was a great opportunity to spend four or five hours railway modelling in good company with the opportunity to exchange skills and experiences.
The 2015 Operating Day will again be held at Merstham Village Hall on Saturday, 18th April (see http://surrey.7mmnga.org.uk/ for more details including directions). All Association members will be made very welcome, and if you would like to give your own layout an outing, please contact Alan Rogers.
