The 7mm Narrow Gauge Association has its own very good web site and the Area Groups page there explains the concept but, in essence, Area Groups are informal groups of Association members living local to one another, who meet on a more-or-less regular basis to facilitate encouragement of the hobby.
The Surrey Area Group vies with the Trent Valley Group and South Downs Group for the top spot as the largest and most active area group in the Association. In truth, we cheat – Surrey is presently known to take in large parts of Buckinghamshire, London, Middlesex, Kent, Sussex and even Cornwall, in addition to the entire spread of Surrey, which is not a small county!
We meet on the third Friday of every month, with some exceptions, for tea and chat at the home of a volunteering member. Those couple of hours each month are usually enough to spur attendees to produce something new for the delight of the others, so keeping the modelling impetus buoyant. The exceptions referred to above are for good reason, honest:
- In February, there is no meeting because we have a weekend away to Somerset to attend Narrow Gauge South West.
- In July, we attend the Steam Gala Weekend at the Amberley Working Museum in West Sussex. This is a two-day show and we usually have a layout there.
- Over the summer, we try to replace at least one evening meeting with a daytime one on the Saturday instead, allowing more play time.
All members receive Surrey Times, the sometimes newsletter of the group which, to date, has been faithfully published every month since before the turn of the century!
For reasons relating to the Data Protection Act, issues are not freely available online but a sample can be sent on request.
