Originally conceived as a small shuttle layout in order that there could be something moving on the Association Publications stand at those events where the Surrey Area Group where in charge, David’s little layout has since seen two rather substantial additions and is almost 12′ in running length.

The whole layout is fully automated, running alternate trains from the sidings in the foreground to the station at the far end. There is also a working level crossing in the middle which can be omitted or fitted either way round to give an inside or outside corner.
Goliath is arriving in the long siding while the diesel tram engine and trailer are sitting in the shorter siding. Once Goliath gets to the end of the siding, he will stop automatically and a relay will switch the points, releasing the tram engine.

This is the level crossing module in it’s down position with a train crossing the road. The red lights on the posts flash and there is a siren which sounds as the gates are about to close.
Saul, the tram engine is an Avalon Line freelance steam tram engine running on a Black Beetle chassis and is pulling a pair of closed vans made from Peco kits.

Another view of the level crossing module with Goliath running light towards the station. Goliath is a model of a freelance articulated locomotive with two Hornby Pug chasses underneath, the front one of which is pivoted in prototypical fashion. The chasses are also wired together, in series, to improve both current pickup and slow-speed capabilities. The speed at which Goliath can be made to almost not move is quite incredible!

The station end, with Edward pausing briefly before departing light engine for the other end. The figures are repainted Preiser whilst the locomotive is a white metal kit on a Dapol Pug chassis.
There is another module currently in production, with an animated feature like the level crossing! Unfortunately, you’ll have to wait for the next outing of the Steyning Slim Line to see it.
